Wax Fang - The Astronaut Cover

The Astronaut, by Wax Fang, is everything you would want from a space opera: lush, sweeping, majestic, a little bit mysterious, and, since it’s about a lone space traveler who gets separated from his vessel, sucked into a black hole, and made into an interstellar god, a little bit tragic, too.

After I had listened to it a couple of times, I had some questions for the band:

Why a space opera?

We wanted to do something big and bold, something experimental and transcendental that was in accord with our tastes in art and music. A metaphysical musical adventure set in the deep reaches of outer space just seemed like a perfect fit for us.

At first I thought the three singles [The Blonde Leading the Blonde, Hearts Are Made For Beating, King of The Kingdom of Man] were independent of the space opera, but after repeated listenings to both works, the singles now sound, to me, like they should be part of the space opera. Were they conceived separately, or in conjunction with the opera? Why were they released separately?

The singles were all written long before the idea of the Astronaut came to be and, as such, have little, if nothing, to do with one another, save that they all come from the same place, that is, us.

How, if at all, does Alpha Man fit into the narrative universe of the space opera?

In my mind, each of our songs is its own microcosm. Therefore, Alpha Man and the Astronaut inhabit separate universes (or alternate dimensions of the same universe, perhaps?). But who am I to tell you what to believe?

YRP (Young Rising Phenoms) is Klassik’s follow-up to In the Making, and it is a heady, ambitious mixture of hip-hop, jazz and soul. The first single, Boogie, is built around a sample of Blame it on the Boogie by the Jackson 5 and will definitely make you want to put your dancing shoes on.

But there is more than one way to party. And so here is Klassik to tell us about some of life’s quieter pleasures.


A Good Drink
A sazerac will do me just fine. Unless I have to make it (I am not handy behind a bar, in a kitchen, or really in any food & beverage capacity haha). Then it’s just Black Label on the rocks. Scotch is perfect for all occasions; well, at least that’s what I tell myself. So, I’ve got my two ice cubes, and I’ve got my glass about a quarter filled. Step one complete.

A Good Listen
Now we need tunes? I’m gonna have to say one of the multitudes of Steely Dan greatest hits collections. I grew up loving that particular blend of jazz/progressive rock and immaculate production. The songwriting was always beyond my comprehension as a youngster, but with scotch in hand, I can relate to the darkness, beauty, and irony of a song like “Deacon Blues”. The horn arrangements, the sax solo at the end. Bliss.

A Good Read
We’re almost there, but we need a good read, huh? Admittedly, I don’t read nearly as much as I like to, but I really enjoy deep, philosophical and/or inspirational literature. My most favorite as of late, and a perfect balance to the deacon’s blues (see what I did there) would be Don Miguel Ruiz’s The Four Agreements. Chock full of guidelines to keep your spirit righteous, and ways to keep the positive energy flowing. Somehow all of that mixed together, the scotch, the Steely Dan, and some philosophical food for thought, keep me inspired and center me when life gets a little crazy.

It’s a simple yet sublime pleasure, and just thinking about it can make you feel a little calmer, a little more content. Imagine: You bring out one of the good rocks glasses (or your favorite mug or a special occasion tea cup) and pour a couple fingers of amber liquid (or something dark and strong or just some whole milk). You drop the needle on the jazz platter (or pull up a blues album on your mp3 player or dig out that mixtape from college). Ensconcing yourself in the coziest seat in the house, you crack the spine on a classic (or find your place in that sci-fi paperback or pull up a biography on your e-book reader). The Honorable South of New Orleans, Louisiana, and their heady stew of rock, funk and jazz are a long-time favorite of mine. As I noted the first time I wrote about them, the best description I can give you is that they’ve found a way to bottle the spirit of New Orleans.

Faithful, Brave, and Honest, their second record, is due next year. But they have just put out a video for the first single, St. Charles Parish. It’s one of their slower numbers, and it is lovely.

A Good Read:

A library the size of an industrial sized refrigerator, must mean I own books that I have yet to read, haven’t finished reading, don’t belong to me, and can’t remember I own right? I think the last piece of fiction I read in it’s entirety was Oil! by Upton Sinclair, before that it was Black Music by Amiri Baraka, which made me realize I didn’t know half as much about jazz as thought I did.

I read one or the other in conjunction with a social history of The Spiritual Churches of New Orleans: Origins, Beliefs, and Rituals of an African-American Religion by Claude F. Jacobs a little bit ago.

I immediately followed those up with Herbal Medicine translated from the original German text. Ok, I’m cheating here and not really abiding by the parameters of the blog. NO Rules! Right now the good read in my life is Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine all about the mysteries of the universe and leaves of the world.

A Good Listen:

Mongo Santamaria: Afro Roots (1972 repackaging of Yambú(1958) and Mongo (1959))

Jazz cats fusing Latin Rhumba, Soul and music from the continent. Outstanding record with everything you need: intense drummer…smooth melodies.

A Good Drink:

It’s sort of like a private cruise in your mouth, which means you’re playing yourself if you decide to substitute for Bean.

Shelf-reading at bandcamp: Co. Armagh edition

Shelf-reading has two purposes: one, to make sure everything is in its right place; and two, to discover works you would not necessarily have though to look for, left to your own researching devices.

I decided to take purpose #2 and apply it to Bandcamp’s tagging system, generally, and the Irish music section, specifically, partially because I can and because why not, and partially because I had been ruminating on net-grumbling I had seen related to popular (trans: American) understanding of “Irish music” as being rock (U2, The Cranberries), traditional folk (the Clancy Brothers, the Dubliners, etc) or folk-rock hybrids (The Pogues, Black 47, Flogging Molly) with no in-between or other options.

I then decided to use the counties of Ireland (North and South), arranged alphabetically, as a framing device for the experiment.

I started this a year and a half ago (!) with County Antrim and then I guess I got sidetracked.

I’m back at it now, though, and today we’re visiting the County Armagh section.

The first thing I learned is that there is not a lot of music tagged “County Armagh” and also Bandcamp’s search function might be a little bit wonky and/or broad because what did come back didn’t seem to have any obvious connection to Armagh.

So I switched to just searching for “Armagh” which brought back more options, though some of them were still not quite right.

In any case, here is what I found that I liked. Note: the connections to Armagh might still be a little bit loose or non-existent, but they are all at least from Northern Ireland.

My reactions, in order: 1) there’s an Irish Metal Archive??!! and 2) did this song cause ceilidhs to break out in the pit? I bet it did. Also some classic ogre-roar vocals in there.


 

The Bonnevilles, Folk Art and the Death of Electric Jesus
These dudes play heavy punk blues. The search I used actually leads to their first record, Good Suits and Fightin’ Boots, which is also quite good; Folk Art and the Death of Electric Jesus is their second record and the one that landed them on the short list for the first ever Northern Ireland Music Prize.

Revise Your Maps is the second solo record from Perhapst, aka John Moen (The Decemberists, Maroons). It is a delightful folk-pop record, smooth and refined in some places, rough and jangly in others.

Other especially strong tunes are Revise Your Maps, Sorrow & Shame, and Still (Mt. Zero).

The more I listened to the record, the more I wanted to know more about the man who made it. So here is John Moen to tell us about his favorite book, record and drink:


A Good Read:

My favorite book is The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt. Because I felt the need to loan it out, and read it at the same time, I now have two hardcover copies on my over-burdened bed stand. The author is (at least some of the time) a Portland guy which makes it all the sweeter, but this isn’t just a case of local pride gone to a reader’s head; this is actually one of the best books you’ll ever read.

It is a Western, of sorts, and a strangely violent look at sibling relationships. A great story told by a very smart and extremely funny writer – I found it hard to make time for others once I had started reading. Luckily, for those impatient folks who seemed to need my participation in their lives, I finished the book much sooner than I desired.

It is so good that you may even buy it twice. I highly recommend The Sisters Brothers.

A Good Listen:

It’s hard to say how good a record really is, when you get hooked as a teenager… I first heard Emergency Third Rail Power Trip by The Rain Parade when I was a hormonal 16 year old, and it made me feel great! By “great!” I mean totally depressed and introspective to the point of inspiration.

I am still inspired by the same record these days and continue to rob it’s “vibe” when writing music of my own. The album is true downer pop written by guys from the eighties taking on the sounds of the sixties. To my ear, the record is incredibly melodic, a tapestry of textures, and also imperfect in all the right ways. I will be buried with a copy… on Saturday.

Gary Numan, Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind)

There are times when I wish I could transmit the experience of listening to body of music for the first time whole and complete and unfiltered, so that y’all could experience it just as I did.

Because if I could, all of you would be able to stand with me on the subway platform on a crisp cold sunny morning, half-asleep and surrounded by other commuters, while the initial notes of I Am Dust, the first song from Splinter (Songs from a Broken Mind) by Gary Numan rolled over us like a grimy tide coming in. They’re darkly seductive and a little bit intoxicating, like heavy sweet aural smoke.

And perhaps, as I did, you all would smile into your scarves and let the dark tide pull you under.
 

 

Here’s what I think about Splinter, now that I’ve listened to it a few times: it is a dark, dense, contemplative record, rigorously constructed and at times a little chilly. A candle-lit cathedral with broken windows. It is gloomy, but pleasingly so.

And while the slower songs – and there are several – are lovely, the places where the lights that shine most brightly through the gloom are the club bangers, like Love Hurt Bleed:

Happy Flowers VS Happy Mondays

The Time: November 1988

The Place: A hospital in suburban Virginia

What happened?

I was 13, and recovering from major surgery. My parents, being dear, sweet, people, offered to bring me some new music to listen to while I was trapped in bed. I requested: The Happy Flowers. They checked the name several times. Yes, I said, I’m sure. I was very, very keen to get hold of their music. I had been waiting for months for it to be released. The new Happy Flowers tape was absolutely the one thing I wanted.

A day or two later, a brand new copy of I Crush Bozo was delivered to my eager little hands.

I felt a pang of disquiet just looking at the cover. But I pressed onwards – I mean, bands but all sorts of random things on album covers, right?

I listened to it in a state of baffled shock. Maybe just the first song is bad, I thought, and kept going.

No.

They were all terrible.

(I was not an experimental noise fan at the time. I am, now, and I still don’t like it.)

I hit the “stop” button and sat there, glaring at the tape in horrified confusion, wondering what had gone wrong.

Eventually I put it away; it sat in my music collection for years, a stone on my mental shoe. I wondered, frequently, what I had really been looking for.

Twenty years later, I was making my way through a Stuart Maconie book – I think it was Pies and Prejudice – when, thanks to one of his musical digressions, I realized what I had done.

My clue was Maconie mentioning that the Flowers had gotten some US press in the late ’80s, which was approximately the same time I was ducking into the magazine section at Tower Records to read Circus and anything else involving guitars and/or tattoos in rushed 10 minute bursts, while my parents picked out movies to watch.

Somehow, between relying on jumbled memories of hastily read material and trying to think around the last of the anesthetic fog, I had confused the Happy Flowers with the Happy Mondays.

The last time I shared a Ghost Twins song, it was Dream On/Dream Off, which is a zippy up-tempo number. Today I bring you Unknown Animal, which starts off at the other end of the “dream noise pop” spectrum – it’s slower, and a little more unearthly – and then suddenly kicks into gear.

And I’m sharing it in video format because, you guys, this video is kind of dream-like itself. In the sense that it starts off with a “behind the scenes” vibe, detours through trippy and weird and then becomes a concert video.

A Good Read: Charles Bukowski – Come On In!

The poem This Machine is a Fountain is stuck up on my desk at work. It’s a great poem to refer back to whenever creating any type of art.

A Good Listen: The Velvet Underground and Nico
This record manages to travel across many, many genres but still retain its focus. Pop, folk, punk, rock n’ roll and avant-garde noise perfectly sit next to each other. Nobody else could have achieved it.

A Good Drink: BrewDog Punk IPA.

The name and label drew me to it at first. And even if a lot of Brew Dog drinks are un-drinkable (Tactical Nuclear Penguin for example) the balance of the punk beer is pretty spot on. It also helps that I can get it from Sainsbury’s rather than having to order it from Scotland.

Le Trouble, Reality Strikes

Le Trouble are from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Their debut EP, Reality Strikes, will be released into the wild this coming Tuesday (November 5), and if you like punk rock dance parties, you should pick it up.

I’ve been an a weird electronica haze lately. Mission Bell was the perfect high energy palate-cleanser. The burst of bracing guitar at the beginning is especially refreshing.
