2015: A Year in Pictures

Hello, darlings. I hope you are having excellent holidays, or at least excellent days.

Normally this feature is just a year’s worth of shows – or a year and a bit – but I’m doing something a little different this time around. 2015 has been amazing, at times, and brutal, at others, and as I uploaded my images, it occurred to me that some of the silences had as much of an impact as the instances of joyful noise.

So, here it is: a year of pictures of rockstars, and some other things, too.

Video: Family Force 5, Sweep the Leg

Family Force 5 are something of a chameleon, by which I mean every time I catch up with them they’ve changed their look. This year’s style appears to be a complex fusion of “video games” and “’80s nerd.” This time around there’s also been some line-up changes: their lead singer (Solomon Olds) retired, and their drummer, his brother Jacob, has assumed frontman duties.

The infectious jams are the same, though. I saw them earlier this year at Warped Tour, at the end of a long, hot day, in front of an impatient crowd awaiting headliners. Family Force 5 started with Sweep The Leg and never took their feet off the pedal. The thing that really stood out: despite the heat, and the impatience, they had ’em dancing all the way to the back.

Christmas Grab Bag 2011 1.0

Some seasonal selections!

From Jon Walker, the season’s (probably) hardest rocking cover of “Do You See What I See?” I’m not quite sure who’s singing with him but at least one of them sounds suspiciously like Tom Conrad, from Empires. Jon Walker’s summary of this song: “Recorded a christmas cover in my basement last winter but never got around to releasing it. Here it is now. I don’t remember if alcohol was involved.” (Mr. Walker is currently on sabbatical in Costa Rica.)

Next it is time to get funky, y’all, and get down with Sugar Rump Fairies, from HOLIDELIC by Everett Bradley. Mr. Bradley is taking his epic show on the road starting at the end of this week; it will be stopping in Hudson and New York, NY; Northampton, MA; and Philadelphia, PA.

Yes, it’s The Killers, singing a quasi-country (more like “country”) song, and yes, it is totally ridiculous. But a) I will listen to Brandon Flowers sing whatever … Continue reading
