Bobby Bare Jr. and Young Criminals’ Starvation League, Undefeated

undefeated

Undefeated, which comes out today (April 15) is Bobby Bare Jr‘s first full-length release since Storm — A Tree — My Mother’s Head (2010). Storm was a solo effort, and landed more on the country end of the spectrum. On Undefeated, he’s backed by a full band, and the tunes are pure roadhouse rock n’ roll: sometimes gritty and aggressive, other times playful.

The first thirty seconds of the first track – North of Alabama by Mornin’ – is a burst of static, the audible of equivalent of a fuse being lit and slowly burning down. The rest of the song – the rest of the record, really – is a meditation on the shape of the resulting explosion.

The Big Time, a dry, biting, carefully observed exploration of changes wrought by success, is an example of the lighter fare:

He’s currently on tour with Cory Branan – New York, your show is this Saturday, at the Mercury Lounge – and in some cities, the documentary about his life Don’t Follow Me (I’m … Continue reading

Link Session: Hurricane Sandy Relief Edition

I’ve seen a lot of music and music-related hurricane relief efforts in my various feeds in the last week; I’ve gathered a bunch of them here for quick reference.

  • Web Aid is a benefit album assembled at lightening speed and featuring a wide variety of electronic music artists, including Staten Island native Udachi, Kicks n’ Licks, Disco Fries and Mic the Drums. Their goal is to raise at least $5,000 for the Carl V. Bini Fund.

[Ed note: The Bini Fund is based on Staten Island, New York City’s smallest borough, and as all of you have probably seen on the news, they took quite a beating. What the news may not have mentioned is that Staten Island is also home to many, many of the first responders – police, fire, sanitation, etc – who were out in the howling wind and rain taking care of the rest of the city, and will be up to their necks in the wreckage for weeks and months to come.]

The Untitled Bobby Bare Jr. Documentary… Now Titled!

It’s been a minute since we had any updates on the film formerly known as The Untitled Bobby Bare Jr. Documentary. The newly-christened Don’t Follow Me (I’m Lost) is currently in post production. You can catch a video here of Bare’s friends and collaborators pondering the question “Why Make a Film on Bobby Bare Jr?” with input from the likes of the mighty Van Campbell (who the video fails to note is one half of the Black Diamond Heavies), Justin Townes Earle, Hayes Carll, Bobby Bare Sr. and more.

Want to help support the film in it’s last stages? Here’s a word from the filmmakers.

Bit: Bobby Bare, Jr.

Obviously, I love me some music. And I love me some music documentaries. I’ll even watch docs about bands I don’t really dig because I find the behind-the-scenes peeks and the glimpses into the more mundane aspects of the lives of musicians so interesting.

So, how much more entertaining would a music doc be if it was about a character like Bobby Bare, Jr.? Well, you’ll get to find out as this doc – currently called The Untitled Bobby Bare Jr. Documentary – is being made now, and NTSIB is teaming up with the filmmakers to bring you information and updates on the project.
