{"id":1494,"date":"2012-08-01T11:30:39","date_gmt":"2012-08-01T15:30:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nowthissound.com\/ntsib\/?p=1494"},"modified":"2012-07-31T22:50:20","modified_gmt":"2012-08-01T02:50:20","slug":"august-video-challenge-tom-petty-and-the-heartbreakers-insider","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.nowthissound.com\/ntsib\/2012\/08\/01\/august-video-challenge-tom-petty-and-the-heartbreakers-insider\/","title":{"rendered":"August Video Challenge: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Insider"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another year, another challenge, or: I am once again setting myself the task of posting a video a day, every day, for an entire month.<\/p>\n<p>I am starting today with the video for <i>Insider<\/i> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tompetty.com\/news\">Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers<\/a> featuring <a href=\"http:\/\/rockalittle.com\/\">Stevie Nicks<\/a>, from <i><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hard_Promises\">Hard Promises<\/a><\/i> (1981). <\/p>\n<p>It was recorded at around the same time as its much more famous cousin, <i>Stop Draggin&#8217; My Heart Around<\/i>, which was written by Tom Petty and Mike Campbell for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers but ended up as the single for <i>Bella Donna<\/i>, Steve Nicks&#8217; first solo record.<\/p>\n<p>I picked it &#8211; and it was a very difficult choice, given both the volume and quality of both Petty&#8217;s musical and video catalogs &#8211; because it is one of my favorite songs, and I didn&#8217;t know he <i>had<\/i> made a video for it until, er, just now, when I went to his VEVO channel to see what was in the &#8220;official&#8221; video library.<\/p>\n<p>I like it for many reasons; it&#8217;s one of his slower, quieter songs &#8211; reflective, even &#8211; a little bitter, and a little bit sad. With books, some you read, and some read you; I&#8217;ve found, over time, that with songs, some you listen to, and some listen to you. This is one that I listened to when I was 15, and later, when I was older, it listened to me very carefully, at times when <i>I&#8217;ve had to live \/ with some hard promises<\/i> had very immediate and specific meaning.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<object width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/x7bjXWzms5I?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/x7bjXWzms5I?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another year, another challenge, or: I am once again setting myself the task of posting a video a day, every day, for an entire month.
